This weekend saw the 2019 Vitality Netball Superleague season commence, with each Superleague side taking to the court for the first time this year at the action-packed Super 10 event.
Two of the five games that were played over the course of the day featured sides who Viper 10 Sportswear proudly provide playing attire and leisurewear for Team Bath Netball and Strathclyde Sirens; both of which started the season with impressive victories.
Expectations for Team Bath Netball have been building throughout the off-season, after a number of interesting signings; none more so than the return of the world class Serena Guthrie. The five time champions were involved in the opening match-up of the Super 10 event as they faced off against Welsh side, Celtic Dragons.
The Blue and Gold proved too strong for the Dragons, establishing an early lead that never looked in danger of being relinquished. In the end, Team Bath Netball’s class and depth proved the difference, with a complete team performance leading to the well deserved 58-41 victory. A Special mention must go to Imogen Allison who was awarded the Vitality POTM for her tireless efforts.
Strathclyde Sirens were featured in the Super 10’s penultimate game against Surrey Storm. Similarly to Team Bath, Strathclyde Sirens started the game in a dominant manner, building an early lead that was consistently built upon from quarter to quarter. The Storm had a couple of key players away on international duty and were forced into naming an inexperienced side, something that was ruthlessly exploited by the Sirens, who executed their game plan to near perfection.
Sirens marquee summer signing, Cat Tuivaiti appeared to enjoy her first game of Netball after missing a year out through injury, with the former Silver Fern showing off her well renowned flair throughout the match, with a plethora of audacious trick passes. The shooter was imperious in leading the Sirens attack and took home the Vitality POTM award for her dominant debut performance.
The Super 10 event has to be classed as a great success, with thousands of enthusiastic fans flocking to the Arena Birmingham, contributing to an incredible atmosphere for the entire day. Alongside the event attendees, Netball fans all over the world were able to tune in to proceedings via Sky Sports, something that will not be taken for granted by anyone who follows the sport.
This Friday (11th January, 7:30pm) will see Strathclyde Sirens and Team Bath Netball go head-to-head as the Blue and Gold head to the gorgeous Emirates Arena in Glasgow to face the Scottish franchise. As always, we remain neutral and wish both sides the best of luck for what is sure to be an epic second round contest.
